Okefenokee

in

Our guide for the boat tour into the Okefenokee offered a few interesting points: it is the head water for the Suwannee (which flows into the Gulf of Mexico) and St. Mary’s (which flows into the Atlantic) Rivers; the source of these waters is rain; as a result of various factors the water is highly concentrated with tannin which makes it look very dark; as  result of being highly acidic mosquito larva cannot develop in the water.

Wikipedia notes that many of the original “swampers” (inhabitants) of the area can trace their families back to early colonial times and then to England.  Due to isolation, their Elizabethan accent survived well into the twentieth century.  I can confirm having difficulty understanding one of the guides. He was 85 years old.
