Ithaca Series

in ,

Over the next entries, I post a series of waterfall shots from a recent trip to Ithaca New York.  For the most part they are those silky-smooth style shots that I prefer to avoid.   There is something I dislike about them;  I can’t put my finger on exactly what I dislike, but I do.

Thus, the series is borne out of a question: do I still dislike this style of shot?   I ask this question to confirm past opinions remain or otherwise.  It might seem silly to take a trip at great expense of time and money — not to mention the need to cross the boarder into those United States which has in recent years become something to avoid — to find an answer when all one needs to do is search the web and find some disgusting pictures. But this is the route I took and anyone offering criticism of this approach shall be accused of micromanagement.

Answering this question will in one way or another determine what will find its way into my photography portfolio over the next little while.  Yet, answering whether I still dislike this style of shot, or not, avoids the real question: why do I dislike the style in the first place?

We often talk about the things we like; less frequently about the things we dislike.  Excepting the avid complainer.  Which I may be one.  It’s good exercise.

I shall try to determine and explain what I dislike. If I’m not able to find compensating likes for all those dislikes I shall find steps that minimise even if they don’t  benefit the like-side of the ledger.  At least the deficit is reduced.
