Fine Art Photography

There are several definitions for Fine Art Photography.  Wikipedia defines the subject as: 

“Fine Art Photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides visual support for stories, mainly in the print media, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to sell products or services”.

Merriam-Webster broadly defines fine art photography as:

“art concerned primarily with the creation of beautiful objects”.

The Art & Architecture Thesaurus provides one as well:

“Fine Art Photography” (preferred term) or “art photography” or “artistic photography” is “the movement in England and the United States, from around 1890 into the early 20th century, which promoted various aesthetic approaches. Historically, has sometimes been applied to any photography whose intention is aesthetic, as distinguished from scientific, commercial, or journalistic”.

This study is the result of a course on the subject taken in May 2011

These are some of the learnings about what adding textures / overlays to photographs can do:

  • it can warm a picture
  • it softens the “digitalness” of a shot
  • it can add a physical-feel dimension to a shot
  • it enables the introduction of randomness into the palette and the canvass
  • background interest
  • use it to create an more sophisticated antique look
  • use to fix gaps in original shot such as blown out areas

This shot is comprised of three layers, applying different textures and one defining the vertical lines. In each case I deleted the portion of the texture layer covering the flower itself.

    This shot I applied three layers of masking, but in each one I deleted the portion covering the flower itself. The first layer applies a highly textured element, the second a more subtle and smoother texture. The last layer provides the vertical lines.
