Fine Art Photography

There are several definitions for Fine Art Photography.  Wikipedia defines the subject as:

“Fine Art Photography refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer as artist. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides visual support for stories, mainly in the print media, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to sell products or services”.

Merriam-Webster broadly defines fine art photography as:

“art concerned primarily with the creation of beautiful objects”.

The Art & Architecture Thesaurus provides one as well:

“Fine Art Photography” (preferred term) or “art photography” or “artistic photography” is “the movement in England and the United States, from around 1890 into the early 20th century, which promoted various aesthetic approaches. Historically, has sometimes been applied to any photography whose intention is aesthetic, as distinguished from scientific, commercial, or journalistic”.

This study is the result of a course on the subject taken in May 2011

These are some of the learnings about what adding textures / overlays to photographs can do:

  • it can warm a picture
  • it softens the “digitalness” of a shot
  • it can add a physical-feel dimension to a shot
  • it enables the introduction of randomness into the palette and the canvass
  • background interest
  • use it to create an more sophisticated antique look
  • use to fix gaps in original shot such as blown out areas

    Patterns & Texture #1

This week’s assignment is on patterns and texture.   Leica M9, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, ISO 800, f/4.0, 1/1000s The shot is of the Phlox growing in our front yard.  Black and White seems to facilitate exposing patterns and texture. I took some artistic license, as provided to me by the course, and played around…

    Textures #1

This week’s photography assignment is on the use of textures.  Applying textures involves post processing with Photoshop (in my case “Elements”).  The process involves opening the photograph and the texture(s) to be applied in PS Elements, then copying the texture image and pasting it as a layer over the photograph.  After pasting the texture change…

Like the one published yesterday this photograph combines a couple of techniques: Light Painting and Texturing. The light painting enables highlighting of specific areas in the picture. The texturing gives the photograph an aged look. Leica D-Luc 3, 40mm, ISO 100, f/8.0, 40s

In this shot I applied the textures and erased the portion covering the flower in the front.  The effect is to distinguish the background.   Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix G Vario 14-45/F3.5-5.6, ISO 100, 90mm, f/5.6, 1/160s

This shot is a variation on Texture #3 posted yesterday.  It adds Gaussian Blur to soften the image and provide a dreamy look.   Panasonic DMC-G1, Lumix G Vario 14-45/F3.5-5.6, ISO 100, 90mm, f/5.6, 1/160s

    Texture #5

This shot I applied three layers of masking, but in each one I deleted the portion covering the flower itself. The first layer applies a highly textured element, the second a more subtle and smoother texture. The last layer provides the vertical lines. The baseline shot was taken while moving the camer upward to get a slight blurring effect. To this shot I applied four layers of masking. Two layers applied a texture; two applied colour. The next effect is below.  Leica M9, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1, ISO 160, f/8, 1/15s
