The Gregorian Calendar replaced the Julian calendar on this day in 1582 in Italy, Poland, Spain and Portugal. It resulted in 10 days being dropped. The last day of the Julian calendar was October 4, 1582 and this was followed by the first day of the Gregorian calendar October 15, 1582. The graphic below shows the timeline for adoption.
