Today, March 14, is Pi Day. And at 1:59, in cyberspace, a giant Pi facsimile will drop. I don’t know exactly what that really means, but as Pi is a somewhat abstract concept I’m sure that its dropping in cyberspace is appropriate. On a more tangible note, TechWeb reports the day will be rounded out with pie-eating contests. No doubt the mathematicians version of the Eucharist.

As with many things, the celebration becomes complicated by minutiae such as which calendar format one uses (e.g., month-day/3-14 is an American format) or which clock one uses (e.g., 1:59 PM is 13:59 on the 24 hour clock). Sometimes it’s best to keep the big picture in mind.
