My first experience with model rockets was in the early 60’s when my grandfather took my brother and I down into the Humber Valley on a sunny summer afternoon to set off some rockets. It was incredible; they went up so high, so fast. In context, it was also the newly-announced Space Age, the latest in the series of “ages” that started with the stone age, the emergence of NASA and the quest to put a man on the moon. All this added to the excitement, and may be a sense of participation in that adventure.
My last encounter was with my scout group in the mid 90’s where we got together one sunny summer afternoon in a local park and set off some rockets. No one talked about the space age, but the excitement was the same.
