Mental note: stick with standards

A recent article “iPhone threatens Microsoft hegemony” in Macnn.com speculated that by 2008 there will be some 7 million windows-based mobile devices in circulation and 10 million iPhones.

For those that have to deploy to these platforms there will be a trade off between leveraging the capabilities specific to the device (but then in doing so becoming inextricably bound to that device) or using only the industry-standards-based capabilities (but then loosing out on some of the neat product-specific features.)

There’s a cost either way. But may be the answer lies in a blend: leverage product-specific capabilities for the neat-cool things; standards-based capabilities for the commodity things. In life, we do a lot of mundane things that can be well-served by commodities, so I think our mobile devices can reflect that too.
