In this photograph I wanted to set a baseline ambient light, albeit in this instance at a low level. There were a couple of challenges: (1) moderating the amount of light from the flash event, and (2) minimizing reflection, in this case off the painting. I use the camera’s built-in capability to reduce the flash intensity by lowering the power of the strobe (1) and I covered the strobe with tissue paper to diffuse the light and reduce the reflection (2). The highlights were then added with a flashlight.
