The remains of Detroit

In an article, The Remains of Detroit, Time publishes twelve photographs of the deteriorating core of Detroit, most apparently related to the auto industry, much from 20 years ago.

The symbolism is hard to miss. As the three largest American auto manufactures plead their case in front of various governments one can only think whether it is best to invest in these or other more viable and innovative participants in the industry. A gap left by GM, Ford and Chrysler would  be filled by the new players; employment would shift from the big three. May be not zero sum, but better than nothing.
