The Audubon Society offers three recommended approaches [1] to keeping squirrels from bird feeders: (1) Exclude: Position the bird feeder where squirrels cannot get at it (2) Baffle: place a large cone on the stand to prevent the squirrel from climbing (3) Distract: put up a squirrel feeder. 
We’ll see how easily distracted these squirrels are.
