We had a chance to play a game at Seven Canyons Golf Club. Formerly a private club it now accepts public play. With the turn in the economy the course has fallen on hard times and we were told is in receivership. Those who invested in a membership of $175,000 have lost it all. Like many golf courses the site is host to private residences. In this case these two-thousand or so square foot houses are timeshare. For $455,000 one can purchase 1/12 ownership and get to use the place one month a year. I’m not sure of the status of these.
The course itself is situated in the spectacular Seven Canyons area just outside of Sedona. When we arrived our cart was waiting for us, with the rented clubs already on the cart. In the cooler were two bottles of water (free water bottles were available at many of the holes).
From the parking area we drove the cart to the pro-shop to check in and pay. The $70 green fee included the cart. The $50 club rental fee included dirt from the previous user. The practice area adjacent to the pro-shop is where we determined that Linda’s club set comprised a collection of manufacturers, including Nike and Callaway. I’m certain the selection was optimized for performance.
On the course there were no ball cleaners, nor were there any on the carts. When we reached the half-way house I asked for a towel to clean the balls and clubs, but they had none left. I’m not sure why they didn’t give us one when we started.
There were only a few yardage markers on the course. There were yardage markers on the cart path; only a few on sprinkler heads. The carts had no GPS.
If I were to play there again I would bring my own clubs and my range finder.
