Water Lilies

Seen in a beaver pond in Algonquin Park.

This shot was taken handheld. The lens was set to f/8 to balance light and depth of field; with the subject about 8m away, f/8.0 give me a depth of field of just over 1m which was about what i needed.  

The shot was composed to keep as much of the left side empty as possible to enhance the sense of stillness. I included the reflections as well for the same reason (the lack of any movement in the water would offer another visual clue).

I processed the image  with Color Efex using the Polarization, Dark Contrasts, and Bring out Detail.  I experimented first with black and white, but I couldn’t find the right balance.  The shot is naturally desaturated so colour isn’t really an overwhelming element of the composition; however in black and white the shot became too abstract for my mood at the time.  May be another day.  There’s a black and white picture lurking under the surface. The filters I applied were mainly to de-saturate and expose some texture in the leaves and the log
