Track & Tower Trail

We left Toronto Sunday morning just before 6 AM and arrived at the gate of Algonquin Park around 8:30.  Not a lot of traffic en route nor in the park, at that time.  Our first stop was at the Track and Tower Trail. When we arrived there were about 5 cars in the parking area.  When we returned nearly four hours later the lot was full with overflow onto Highway 60.  Such is the popularity of this park when the colours are at their peak.  The trail is reported to be 7.7km, however, I tracked it as being over 10.  The expected time to complete is 4 hours which is what it took us. However, we could have cut an hour off that time had I not stopped to take pictures along the trail.

This is the compromise that my wife makes.  I’ll go on long walks or hikes with her; she has to wait while I take pictures.  It seems to work.

This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/16 to get as much depth of field as possible.  I focused on the hyper-focal distance, which on the 50mm at f/16 is 525.8 cm.

The shot was composed to align the lit tree trunk on the 1/3 line of the image. I liked the shape of the trees but what attracted me first was the light striking the trunk with the red of the leaves in the background. The shot contains red, green and blue which are opposite points on the colour wheel.

I processed the image  with Color Efex using the Polarization,  Bring out Detail, and Darken-Lighten Center Filters.  I use the Bring Out Details filter to balance the light by bring out detail that is otherwise hidden in the shadows.  The image was only lightly processed; it didn’t need a lot.
