Over the last few days I have been exploring and assessing medium format images. The obvious thing to do in an assessment is to compare. The reference point for me is my M9, regardless of how appropriate that is.
The first thing I checked was the level of detail. One would expect the medium format to out perform as the “sensor” is materially larger. This is not the case; the Leica is materially sharper and extracts a lot more detail. However, these are early days in my voyage and I realise that film type and processing method will strongly influence the outcome. Therefore, it is too early to tell.
Next is the aesthetic quality, which is highly intangible and mostly subjective. Yet it was this quality that was the first thing that struck me; there is a difference which is hard to pinpoint.
The silhouettes of the trees against the sun-light lake; I caught a flock of geese.
