Killarney Provincial Park

A week ago Saturday, May 18th, we drove north to Killarney where we stayed until the following Friday (May 24th).  Killarney, population 500, is some 400KM north of Toronto just west of the Killarney Provincial Park boundary.  The weather turned out to be a bit of an inhibitor; rain washed out some of the trails we had planned on hiking.  As an alternative we took a three-hour boat ride along the Georgian Bay coast.

There were three distinct areas that we saw: the village of Killarney; the Georgian Bay Coast; the forest areas.  Each has it’s own character and appeal. These will be covered in future posts.

I shot four rolls of film and took about 300 digital images.  300 is lower that I typically shoot for a week’s vacation; shooting with film is a more deliberate process in shot making and that has influenced the digital side.  I spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning developing and then processing the film.

There’s lots to learn in working with film.  I’m using the zone system at capture to measure the light.  My spot meter makes this step fairly straight forward, however it must be done properly and with care.  Film selection is also a critical choice.  I am happier with the results from the Ilford PANF+ (ISO 50) film vs. the Ilford HP5+ (ISO 400).  The latter is a lot grainer which for my taste limits its use to a certain style of landscape shot.  It does work well for the city shots I took.

I did take one relatively long exposure shot (2 minutes) which is something not possible with digital.  I’ll explore this further in the future.
