A stable and repeatable process that generates consistent results is marked by several factors, including temperature, correct ratios of volumes of chemicals, clean equipment, correct timing among other things.
Implicit in getting all the above correct is that the devices one uses to measure are themselves correct; that the film and chemicals behave as specified, etc. To confirm these things involves calibration.
I have calibrated most of the tools and components used in the process:
• shutter speed to confirm the accuracy of each setting.
• thermometer to confirm accurate readings
• film to confirm ISO
• chemicals to confirm development time
• agitation method to confirm development time.
If any one thing in the process changes, it’s replacement needs to be calibrated.
