Essaouira is a walled city on the Atlantic coast. It is formerly a Portuguese fort. The City seems to be undergoing a renovation, driven by tourism, yet there are areas that are in disrepair.
The character is more relaxed than Marrakech in part because it is smaller; fewer people walk the streets lessening the tension. While there seems to be a larger proportion of tourists, sections, such as the market and the port, seem to have retained much of their character.
