The groundhogs have differed in their assessments whether there will be an early Spring or not. Shubenacadie Sam and Punxsutawney Phil have sided on the early Spring conclusion; Wiarton Willie has taken the contrarian position. Sadly, Winnipeg Willow died in rehab before he could offer his assessment [1]. I guess the pressure just got to him.
Some thoughts:
- Historically there has been little concordance so I’m not sure that this year’s conflicting points of view should be that startling
- Wiarton is closer to me than Nova Scotia or Pennsylvania so I think I should give more weight to this assessment
- This winter, in contrast to last, has been remarkable mild. Earlier this week the temperatures hovered around 15C. I BBQed [outside] steak on Wednesday. There is no snow on the ground.
This morning when I took the garbage out there was that distinctive “Spring Feeling” in the air, and supporting that sense I heard birds singing; Cardinals among others. It’s usually not until March that I hear birds.
