Packing

in

We’re getting some work done on the house. The currently estimated start date is April 25th.  It is suppose to take 3 weeks. My level of anticipation is growing.

The work includes painting the main floor, replacing flooring in the main hall, our office, kitchen and laundry room, updating the powder room and a few other fixes along the way. Where we are replacing flooring, things need to be packed up and moved out of the room.  Where the only work is painting, we just need to move the furniture into the centre of the room.  The labourers will cover it up.  Everywhere, pictures and other wall hangings need to be removed.

I expect there will be a lot of dust. So the piano is something that needs special attention.  I wasn’t comfortable with just covering it in some sort of tarp, so I’ve sealed it in plastic.  I bought a large roll of plastic (3×45 meters) for this task.  The remainder of the sheeting will be used to cover the book cases, protecting them from the dust and the need to unload the books.

  1. I laid out a sheet of plastic (about 3×5 meters) on the floor
  2. Then I rolled the piano over and centred it on the sheet.
  3. Then I pulled the sheet up around each of the corners and taped to form sort of a diaper
  4. Then I cut a second sheet of plastic and laid it over the top of the piano
  5. Then I taped the top sheet to the bottom diaper. I completely sealed the joint between the two sheets leaving no gaps for dust to penetrate.
  6. I then cut out the wheels so I could still move the piano
  7. Finally I taped over the edges and corners as these are the most vulnerable to breaks and damage.
