Each weekend (actually Saturday through Monday) between the last one in July and the first one in September, individuals may fish for cod. There are many restrictions, such as the method used to fish, but the primary one is the limit of 5 fish per day per person and 15 per boat. Yet, people go out and catch their limit. Most people go out in groups of 3 in a small “speed boat”. They don’t need to go out very far, sometimes just a few hundred metres off shore.
Cod is an important part of life in Newfoundland.
