Reading through my mother’s recipe book I came across her date and nut cake. I decided to make it, in part because of the memory of it and in part because I wanted to bake something that used the bundt cake form (which was included in the photograph in the previous post).
My mother got this recipe from her mother, who in turn got it from her mother-in-law. I don’t know the history beyond that. It wasn’t until I tasted it that I confirmed my recollection of having this cake as a child, but beyond that there’s not much else.
I lightly sprinkled icing sugar over the cake.
I included the hand-written recipe in the image. My mother’s recipes are usually much less descriptive than recipes one finds in published cookbooks. They seem to be written for someone who knows how to bake; there is a lot of tacit knowledge implied.
