Patio on Felderrnhalle

The Feldherrnhalle, or “Field Marshals’ Hall,” was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and built between 1841 and 1844. Designed by architect Friedrich von Gärtner, it was modelled after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, Italy. The monument replaced a former Gothic-style gate and was intended to honour the Bavarian army and its victorious generals.

The Feldherrnhalle gained attention during the Nazi era:

  • On November 9, 1923, it was the site of a clash between Bavarian State Police and Nazi Party SA members, ending Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch
  • During the Third Reich, it became a Nazi memorial site, with a monument called the Mahnmal der Bewegung added to commemorate the putschists who died in 1923
  • The area in front of the Feldherrnhalle was used for SS parades and oath ceremonies for new recruits

I couldn’t help but wonder about transporting this patio back 101 years and watching the events while drinking a beer.
