The Japanese Garden in Kaiserslautern is the largest of its kind in Europe spanning approximately 13,500 m². It was created through a unique public-private partnership between the city of Kaiserslautern and the “Japanese Garden Association Kaiserslautern”, founded in 1997.
The factors and motivations to build the garden included:
- Sister City Relationship: The idea for the garden originated from a 1993 visit by a delegation from Bunkyo Ku, one of Tokyo’s 23 districts, and a sister city of Kaiserslautern.
- Cultural Exchange: The garden was conceived as a way to foster the spreading of Japanese culture in Kaiserslautern and as a tangible representation of the cultural ties between the two cities.
- Urban Renewal: The site chosen for the garden was a devastated and inaccessible urban green area that had been abandoned after World War II. The project transformed this neglected space into a beautiful public garden.
