This photograph is of my Great Aunt Suzy, my grandmother’s sister, and her son, Paul. I estimate the date based on Paul’s apparent age (2 years). However, the car offers some supporting evidence.
The car appears to be a 1932 or earlier Durant Coupe. The following details help with this identification:
- “DB” Logo on the Wheel Cap: The “DB” stands for Durant Motors, which produced cars under its own name as well as other brands like Star, Flint, and DeVaux. The logo confirms its origin.
- Hood Ornament: The hood ornament is consistent with Durant designs of the early 1930s, which often featured sleek and ornamental motifs popular at the time.
- Body Style: The two-door coupe body style matches Durant’s offerings in the early 1930s. Durant produced stylish and affordable vehicles aimed at competing with Ford and Chevrolet.
Durant Motors was an American automobile manufacturer founded by William C. Durant after he was ousted from General Motors. The company operated from 1921 to 1932, and its vehicles were marketed in Canada, with a factory in Leaside, Toronto, which aligns with the location and timeframe of the photograph. This car represents a piece of Canadian automotive history during the final years of Durant Motors before it ceased operations in 1932.
