Over the three weekend of September 29-30th, October 7-8th, and October 13-14th we drove north and visited three parks to see the fall colours.

    Sentenal Lookout

We were up in Algonquin Park last weekend. The west side of the park was at it’s peak; the east side will likely reach it next weekend.   I took this shot in tight with my Panasonic using a focal length the equivalent of 200mm.  I wanted to get a shot that was just pure…

  • Smoke Lake

    Smoke Lake

It’s easy to think of Spring and Fall as transition seasons between the Winter and the Summer.  The flush of Fall lies in opposition to the colourless Winter. I took this shot at 8:44 AM while the mist remained on he lake. I used a tripod.  The image was processed with Silver Efex.

  • Leaves on Peck Lake

    Leaves on Peck Lake

It’s easy to miss the leaves for the forest.   I processed this shot with Color Efex. I applied just two filters: Polarization, to slightly enhance the boldness of the colours and Darken-Lighten Center to highlight the subject.  The Darken-Lighten filter is much like a vignetting tool but it adds two capabilities not often found:…

  • Hardwood Lookout

    Hardwood Lookout

Seeing the trees in the forest. I processed this with Color Efex using the Polarization, Dark Contrasts, Detail, Darken-Lighten Center and Image Boarder filters.  The Dark Contrast and Detail filters have the most impact.  The former tempers the colours; the later brings out texture especially on the bark.

  • Kettle Lake

    Kettle Lake

I processed this with Color Efex using the Polarization,  Detail, Darken-Lighten Center and Image Boarder filters.  The  Detail filter brings out texture  on the bark.  The Darken-Lighten enabled me to lighten the area around the trees for added emphasis.

  • Hardwood Lookout #2

    Hardwood Lookout #2

A world without ones glasses it can be both beautiful and dangerous. This shot was taken while moving the camera upward. The exposure was 1/2 second.  There several techniques involving direction of the move (top down, bottom up, left right, twist), duration of the exposure, when to release the shutter (e.g., while the camera is…

  • Peck Lake

    Peck Lake

This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/16 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension that comes with that.  I focused on the hyper-focal distance, which on the 50mm at f/16 is 525.8 cm.  I have used a laser range…

  • Sentenal Lookout

    Sentenal Lookout

This shot was taken handheld.  I under focused the shot to avoid capturing the distinctness of the leaves rather to capture points of colour, along the lines of pointillist techniques.  The shot was composed to backlight the leaves as well as offset them against a white background. I processed the image  with Color Efex using…

  • Water Lilies

    Water Lilies

Seen in a beaver pond in Algonquin Park. This shot was taken handheld. The lens was set to f/8 to balance light and depth of field; with the subject about 8m away, f/8.0 give me a depth of field of just over 1m which was about what i needed.   The shot was composed to…

  • Lookout onto Cache Lake

    Lookout onto Cache Lake

After hiking about 5km we came to the highlight of the trail: a view of Cache Lake with Treasure Island on the left and Delano Island on the right This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as…

  • Lookout on to Cache Lake #2

Lookout on to Cache Lake #2

Yesterday I referred to a portrait orientation of the shot. While I had not planned on publishing it I changed my mind.  That’s agility! This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension that…

  • Trail of Leaves

    Trail of Leaves

Our return from the lookout took us along a wider part of the trail which is also used by bicyclists. As a bicycle trail it runs 16km to Rock Lake.  Our journey only lasted a few hundred meters until we reached the turn off on to a lesser trail back to the parking lot.  …

  • Finger on the Map

    Finger on the Map

I raised my finger in the air, where it lands I know not where … Where it landed on the map was 1253 Black River Road, near Bigwind Lake Provincial Park.  The resident at this address is a beaver.  First beaver I’ve ever known to have an address.  He didn’t seem to be home.  …

  • Black River Road

    Black River Road

We spent Sunday night in Port Sydney.  Early Monday we started our tour to Bigwind Lake Park.  We were guided to the north side of Old Wagon Road, which we quickly determined was impassable, at least for a regular passenger vehicle.  So we re-planned and found an alternative route to 1253 Black River Road. The…

  • Jake Lake

    Jake Lake

Adjacent to Highway 60 is Jake Lake.   This shot was taken on a tripod. The aperture was set to f/8.  I didn’t use a higher aperture (the usual f/22) as I wanted a faster shutter speed. I focused on the hyper-focal distance, which on the 28mm at f/8 is 329.5 cm.    The shot…

  • Lookout on Booth’s Rock Trail

    Lookout on Booth’s Rock Trail

This 5KM trail loops above Rock Lake to a lookout and then back down to lake level along the shoreline.   This shot was taken on a tripod. The aperture was set to f/22 to get a complete depth of field. I focused on the hyper-focal distance, which on the 28mm at f/22 is 121.6…

  • Roots on Booth’s Rock Trail

    Roots on Booth’s Rock Trail

Booth’s Rock has several spots to look out over Rock Lake, each separated by some trees or other hazards.   This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension that comes with that.  I focused…

  • Arches on Booth’s Rock Trail

    Arches on Booth’s Rock Trail

From the outlook we walked down to lake level along a path through the trees.  The evergreens were peppered with the colour of a few maples. This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension…

  • Crosson Lake

    Crosson Lake

Bigwind Lake Provincial Park is an “unserviced park.” This means there are no facilities; entrance to the park is via un-assumed roads, which in many places can only be cross with a 4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle.  We were in the park for over two hours, without seeing a single person.  This shot was taken…

  • Keyhole Lake

    Keyhole Lake

This was our second trip to Bigwind Lake Provincial Park.  This time we drove in a four-wheel drive vehicle.  This is necessary given the state of the “roads” through the park.   It was a foggy day; the weather report predicted rain showers around 11:00 AM so we had just a couple of hours in…

  • Keyhole Lake #2

    Keyhole Lake #2

The composition of the lake, the fog, the yellow tamaracks and the silence was quite spectacular; it seemed so alien. This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/16 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension that comes with that.  I focused…

  • Visitor’s Centre

    Visitor’s Centre

After our hike along Booth’s Rock Trail we stopped in at the Visitor’s Centre.   My interest in this shot was to capture a range of colours as well as the shapes of the trees.  I like the third image–processed with Nik Color Efex–but I felt the detail that was brought out distracted from the…

  • Birches

    Birches

Another shot from Booth’s Rock Trail.   This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was opened to f/4 for speed over depth of field; I wanted speed to reduce the blur of movement of the subject from the wind.  I focused on the tree trunks.  The shot was composed in tight to capture the…

  • The Rock

    The Rock

I have to assume that this is the Rock or a part of it on Booth’s Rock Trail.   This shot was taken on a tripod. The lens was shut down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible as well as the sense of dimension that comes with that.  I focused on…
