2016 Curaçoa

We visited Curaçao for one week starting January 24th, 2016.  We stayed with my brother and sister-in-law in Jan Thiel, just south-east of Willemstad.

  • We arrived at Curaçao International Airport (#1) and from there drove to my brother’s place in Jan Thiel (#2)
  • This was a relaxing trip trip with a very light itinerary so we spent a lot of time around the pool (#2)
  • However we took one day to tour the west side of Island (#5), and specifically taking a driving tour through Christoffelpark
  • Each day I drove my brother to his work place (#3)
  • We drove several into Otrobanda, the downtown quarter of WIllemstad, to visit the city as well as restaurants

In January we flew south to Curaçao to visit my brother and sister-in-law. I’ve packaged some of the shots into the video below.

    Snapshots from Curaçao #1

As the cool weather drags on, delaying the date when we can sit out on the patio, I fondly remember sitting by the pool. We spent many hours by the pool.

    Snapshots from Curaçao #2

If you do a search on Flickr for Willemstad Curacao hundreds of shots looking like the one below or similar will pop up: Many photographers — including myself — have the urge to get the iconic shot; a unique shot of some subject; something different from the ordinary; the shot that has never been taken. Some…

    Birds

Each day I drove past the bird sanctuary on Santa Barbara Plantation.  I stopped in a few times. It was quiet and appeared to be lightly used, if at all.

  • Westpunt

    Westpunt

The distance from Jan Thiel to Sabana Westpunt is just 52 km, but the travel time is over an hour, betraying the traffic through Willemstad and the nature of the roads: two lanes for the most part although generally in good condition.  We drove to the west end of the Island — Westpunt — on our…

  • Fort Beekenburg

    Fort Beekenburg

The Fort is located in Jan Thiel; entrance is free. The Fort itself is small but it offers a modest view, better if one climbs inside steps to the top of the tower. It is ranked #37 of 96 things to do in Willemstad by Tripadvisor.ca.   I have a romantic view of forts and…

  • Fort Nassau

    Fort Nassau

Unlike Beekenburg, this Fort is well maintained and used.  It provides a wide view of the area, including the Port at Willemstad, and a very nice restaurant.  We only briefly walked around the ramparts of the Fort, preferring to spend time in the restaurant for lunch.  We sat on the covered patio to enjoy the…

    The Shore

One evening in Curaçao, we had dinner at the Shore Restaurant.  We arrived to enjoy the setting sun.  We had a table on the patio.

    Flamingos

Along Kaminda San Willibrordus Road is a small shallow lake which is home to hundreds of Flamingos.  We parked on the side of the road and walked along the edge of the lake.
