Introduction:
COVID-19 is one of those events that is shared by people all around the world; what makes it rare is that we are all participants, not simply spectators. What makes it insidious is that it appears it can be asymptomatic yet contagious. Furthermore, if symptoms do surface, and the full effect of the disease does take hold, it may be delayed by as much as 14 days, during which time many other people might have been infected.
The contagion and its effects can be invisible to us. Each of us is faced with the unseen and unknown, and as many of us have, in varying degrees, fear of things with these characteristics, we feel a heightened sense of tension. Yet, this shared event, with the emotional strain and its disruption to our daily life, is also a force that binds us together. We see evidence of this in those places where there are regular chants of support for healthcare workers. All of us can draw solace from such responses. In what ever form they take, whether a community response or an individual act of good will, we can relate to it and feel a sense of warmth in our hearts.
This pandemic makes tangible to us the many things we take for granted in our daily life:
- that we can touch things around us without worrying about catching a disease;
- that we can easily meet and congregate with our friends and neighbours one-on-one or at community events;
- that we can easily travel to anywhere in the world;
- that our food is easily purchased and safe to eat;
- the role and relevance of the often invisible institutions that marshal our life, such as healthcare and government;
That events in one part of the world can effect other parts is not really new. What is new is the scale and pace of impact; the Black Death in the 14th century happened over a period of years or decades, not weeks. Importantly, it reminds us that the effect can be both negative and positive. While the Magna Carta is often cited as an inflection point enroute to modern democracy, some might argue the role of the Black Death in the real transfer of power from the upper to middle and lower classes that, in England, lead to the fall of the feudal system.
In facing this common threat, we find we are also dependent on each other, and we come closer together by facing a common challenge, maybe as a response to over come our fears.
I think this project is about our individual responses to this event; what we share and what is different. Each of us reacts in a different way, we interpret events according to our individual mental frame; we highlight different things; ignore others. What do we think about it? Where do we think it will take us? What are our concerns and hopes? What are those little things that take on more importance? etc.
What do you think?

First Letter …
COVID-19 Project Pictures and Videos
Approach:
There are three channels of communication: email; this web site; WhatsApp. None has any inherent preference.
Contributions may be made through any channel. My role is to consolidate what is provided. I will use this web site to hold the consolidated material.
I will solicit contributions by asking a series of questions. I will send out the questions in an email. All emails are saved in the communications section so that they can be recalled at will. Replies may be by any of the channels. I will consolidate all replies and save that record on this site so everyone can see and comment. You are not obliged to reply nor do you need to reply immediately; you are welcome to reply to any previous question at any time. You can reply as often as you want. You can change your mind.
Anyone is welcome to ask their own questions of the group. They can either forward the question to me and I will send it out via email (remember not everyone is on WhatsApp) or they can post it in WhatsApp and I will send out an email.
If any one has any concerns, questions or suggestions,they may contact me directly by email ([email protected]) or through the WhatsApp group.
Technical Considerations:
This material is hosted on my web server, however, it is not connected with the rest of the site; it is only accessible by a direct link, which I have provided to each participant in the project (https://hertha.ca/project/overview). The implication is that the menu bar [Home | Store | Search | About & Contact] will take you to my regular site and you will need to re-enter the link to get back here. You should use the “back” and “forward” buttons to navigate within these pages.
The project uses three means of communication:
- This site
- A WhatsApp Group (contact me to get access)
Project Agreement:
The results of this work are expected to be published in an eBook, and/or a book and/or shown in a gallery. Each person participating in this work will be attributed in the final work or works, unless they prefer to remain anonymous. When we reach that point, I will contact each person to determine their preferences. To contextualize the individual responses, I may want to tie them to your location and age subject to any need for anonymity.
Projects like this one rarely have any financial returns, so you cannot expect any such benefits. I expect to bear the costs, if any. I don’t anticipate asking anyone to contribute to cover the costs, if there are any.
This project is a collaboration, that is to say, it is not my work, but it is all of ours. We are all contributors, although I take on the added role of project manager. By analogy, this is like a book with each chapter written by a different author, and I while I also write a chapter, I also play the role of editor who pulls things together.
Some implications are:
- you retain ownership, rights etc. to all work you contribute;
- you need to grant non-exclusive, perpetual rights to publish your contributions in a book, ebook, website, etc. and/or to show it in a gallery
Before anything is published each person will have the opportunity to review and comment on their contribution.
Any questions or concerns should be forwarded to me at [email protected].
