Weddings take a lot of time to plan. Halls, where a reception might take place, often require reservations a year in advance. My daughter’s wedding certainly followed that path. My son and daughter-in-law’s wedding was also following in that line. But then COVID came along. No groups of more than 10, no travel, no, no, no …
So gone was the Church Wedding, deferred was the reception, gone was the big ceremony, gone was the influx of friends and family from far and wide, gone was the honeymoon. Everything happened in about 15 minutes in our back yard. No minister of the Church, simply a civil servant given the authority by our municipality to wed. He does house calls.
Through Skype and Zoom we brought in our immediate relatives from Marseilles, Cayman Islands, Nashville, Eugene Oregon, Regina, Vancouver, and Toronto. The service was followed by a dinner for 11 people, at home.
It turned out, at least for me, to be just as exciting, just as emotional, just as significant. It shone in its simplicity and intimacy. The technology was a gateway, not a barrier, to allow everyone to share in the short, but sweet, event.
