Pinckney Island National Wildlife Reserve

Pinckney Island is located in South Carolina between the mainland and Hilton Head Island. The Reserve takes up most of the island. Like most reserves entry is free.

A parking lot is located less than a half mile from the gates; no motorized vehicles may proceed beyond that point.  Out came the bicycles.

Beyond that point a 3.2 mile gravel laneway forms the spine towards the northern end of the island.  Off this lane were secondary trails often of grass and or hard packed soil and on some occasions ribbed with the roots of trees. These latter conditions made bicycling a little more difficult, especially for our foldable Bromptons which are better suited to paved or hard surfaces.

The Reserve is a mix of open spaces, wetlands and forests of pine and oak.  There were many song birds and waterfowl.  We made our way to the end of the gravel lane and then returned taking a side trip towards Dick Pond.  We stopped several times to observe the birds and take pictures.

We met only a few other people in the reserve.  Like most of the parks and reserves we have visited on our trip this one as quite empty.
