Stalingrad Remembered

The victor writes history, and therefore chooses what to remember … and what to forget.

Reuters reports “In a fiery speech in Volgograd, known as Stalingrad until 1961, Putin lambasted Germany for helping to arm Ukraine and said, not for the first time, that he was ready to draw on Russia’s entire arsenal, which includes nuclear weapons…Pootin evoked what he said was the spirit of the defenders of Stalingrad to explain why he thought Russia would prevail in Ukraine, saying the World War Two battle had become a symbol of ‘the indestructible nature of our people’.”

Pewtin didn’t mention the support the USSR got from the Allies during the the Second War. The United States [1][2] alone provided the Soviet Union with $11.3 billion (equivalent to $180 billion in 2021) worth of supplies [3], including 400,000 jeeps and trucks, 14,000 airplanes, 8,000 tractors, 13,000 tanks, 1.5 million blankets, and 15 million pairs of army boots [4]. This accounted for 17% of the total war expenditure of the US [3].

According to the Stalingrad Foundation, the Soviet Union received $2.8 billion (equivalent to $44 billion in 2021) worth of supplies from the United States during the Battle of Stalingrad. This included food, fuel, weapons, ammunition, vehicles, aircraft, and other military equipment.
