Recently a Federal Member of Parliament voiced frustration with Tim Hortons after the fast food chain began testing new paper lids in certain Ottawa locations. Taking to social media, the MP criticized the “woke paper lids that dissolve in your mouth.”1
This MP is not the only one. A provincial member introduced a private member’s bill in February that would reverse the policy, complaining about the loss of plastic straws: “Soggy, limp, wet and utterly useless: we are not talking about the Liberals. We are talking about paper straws,”1
While many businesses are responding to federal legislation to reduce plastic waste, coffee lids are not covered, so this move by Tim Hortons is a business decision.
Why direct attention to this matter over other problems such as: the murder of a Canadian by a foreign government, support for the war in Ukraine, the decline in Canada’s productivity, climate change, protection of northern territories, foreign interference in elections, de-globalization’s impact on inflation, etc. Focusing on coffee cup lids seems trivial in comparison.
