Get-away Weekend: The Bad Lands

Erin was our first stop. Located near that village are the Badlands. They were actually exposed as a result of the land being cleared for farming in the early 1900’s. Removal of the vegetation combined with overgrazing by cattle exposed the shale to the elements. Use of the land for grazing stopped in the 1930’s, but the shale has continued to erode, causing the badlands to increase in size each year.
