Our flight from Toronto took us over the North Pole on our way to Hong Kong, where we had a connecting flight to Shanghai. We spent the night in Shanghai and then took the “D” Train to Zhenjiang and then a bus to Yangzhou. The “D” Trains are modern, fast, and clean electric trains that have recently been deployed in China and for our needs travel between Shanghai and Nanjing. Our plans were to stay in Yangzhou just for the day and take a night train to Huangshan City, through Nanjing in the evening.
After arriving in Yangzhou we took a cab to the Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School at Yangzhou where our son, Will, teaches English. It was nice to see where he lives and some of his friends. From the school we visited Slender West Lake Park, followed by dinner in a local restaurant Will frequents and then off to the train station.
Our flight path from Toronto to Hong Kong Carried us over the North Pole or very near to it. I’m now trying to decide whether I can claim that I have been to the North Pole.
Early Morning walk in Shanghai before catching the train. On the right of the picture you can see a street cleaner. I saw street cleaners everywhere we went in China. Only once, in Beijing, did I see machines doing the work. This picture was taken at about 6:15AM. You can see street cleaners through out the day.

Will’s School where he teaches English and offers private tutoring on request (e-mail [email protected] for more information)
Waiting at Yangzhou station for our train to Nanjing. Those people not talking or playing with their cell phones were watching intently the coverage of the earthquake. It was quite compelling.
