Getting the 3G

There have been several stories of how people got their new iPhones. Many have asked me whether I waited in line all night. I usually start my story with a description of how I had to fight back a little old lady with a wicked cane, finally beating her down onto the ground where I held her down by pressing the heal of my shoe into her throat.

But, alas the truth is less dramatic. There is a little store I pass by on my way to work. They sell the phone. I arrived there at 8:32AM. I was number 6 in line. I thought the store would open at 9:00, but it didn’t open until 9:30. I waited. As a small store their inventory was quite limited, but I was able to get the last 16G iPhone, in Black. So I was happy. I was out by 10:15.

Like others, I was unable to activate the phone at the store due to network traffic, but I did so when I got home, without any problems.

I’ll be monitoring how much data traffic I use. I went for the least-cost package which offers 400mb data per month. But, WiFi is not included in that calculation. I use WiFi at home, and there are some local hotspots included in the package so I’ll see if I can reserve the 400mb for the exceptions when WiFi isn’t available. I’ve turned roaming off.

The Apple Store does include a number of applications, many of them free. I’ve downloaded several, including one for FaceBook, and a program called “Remote” that enables me to use the iPhone as a remote control for iTubes on my iMac (or iTV).
