For the bird feeder, a Canon 200mm f/2.8 prime lens:
Earlier I posted that I had been trying to find the right angle to shoot from, but each one presented difficulties with the background. This lens seems to solve the problem: shooting wide open the background is sufficiently blurred to form a pleasant bokeh rather than a distracting cacophony. 
Only thing missing is the birds.
