Dinners

Breaking through the fast-food barriers to find a restaurant can be a challenge. There are several online services, such as Trip Advisor, which can be helpful but need to be treated with caution.  Talking to the front desk is often the most helpful.  Some successes:

  • Aunt Jenny’s Catfish Restaurant in Ocean Springs Mississippi
  • Taranto’s Crawfish, Seafood and Poboys in Biloxi Mississippi
  • Lap’s Grocery & Grill in Spanish Fort, Alabama
  • Le Bleu’s Landing in Sulphur Louisiana

Many of the meals are fried; the seafood is often battered.  Each of these restaurants were small, family-run / single owner establishments.  Cutlery includes a fork wrapped in a serviette, sometimes with a knife.  Beer is usually served straight, in the bottle.  The meal is generally delivered promptly.

I’ve decided that is it best not to approach a meal with a preconceived notion of what is a good or bad style, method of cooking or presentation.  Rather just receive it as presented as representative of local culture.
