Located just south of Savannah Georgia on the South Newport River, we arrived before 9:00 AM. We parked the car, unpacked the bicycles and began our tour.
As we approached the park down highway 131, about 100 meters in front, a deer jumped across the road. As I watched it clear the road a second deer sprang from the woods right in front of the car. Fortunately I was driving well below the 50 mph limit otherwise the outcome might have been other than a near miss. In some respects one might expect such events as one approaches a wildlife reserve. A learning here is if one deer jumps out be prepared for another.
The park has a four mile senic drive with several viewing points and biking-hiking trails along the route. We biked this route as well as a number of the trails. During the Second War the area hosted an airfield. Although mostly over grown, the perimeter remains serviceable as a concrete biking-hiking trail, which was easier to ride than the dirt trails through the woods.
I carried my 400mm lens in anticipation, but in the end for naught. I guess our dramatic wildlife experience happened before we even entered the park.
