L’Anse aux Meadows

in

We left Port au Choix at 9:00 AM yesterday and arrived at L’Anse aux Meadows before noon to visit the Viking settlement. Following that we checked into the Inn in St. Anthony.  Other highlights of the day included: seeing three moose as we drove north; drinking iceberg beer (water from icebergs); eating cod tongues with scrunchions.

L’Anse aux Meadows is the site of a Viking settlement. The Vistor’s Centre provides an historical context and the story of the discovery of the site.  Parks Canada has recreated some of the huts locating them adjacent to the site of the original settlement.  Actors play the role of Viking settlers.  A 2km path runs from the settlement along the coast and then turns in-land back to the parking lot.  We all found the site more than expected.

Following the visit to L’Anse aux Meadows we continued on to St. Anthony, where we will spend three nights.  A chance to slow down from the pace of daily driving and an opportunity to more closely explore an area.

For dinner we shared a plate of cod tongues sprinkled with scrunchions. They were juicy and rich in flavour.  The cod fish I ordered for the main course however was subpar in comparison to that served in the other restaurants recently visited in Newfoundland.  It was over cooked. Sadly the same was true for Dad and Linda.

Tomorrow we will charter a boat and look for whales, sea birds and icebergs.
