Interlude

I’ve been working on a number of projects including: preparing my travel books (i.e., in hardcover print and eBook formats) covering our recent trip to Europe; a review of material on sacred architecture, specifically of catholic churches; preparation for our next tour; and finally preparing for the penultimate stage of a project I’ve been working on for about 10 years.

But in the meantime, I was going through my photo collection and I came across this shot taken in Lijiang China in 2012.  There were a few things that caught my attention here. First, was the contrast between the commotion of the street and the focus of the mother on the danger that it exposed to her and her son. Second, in all that commotion, the serenity of the boy sitting quietly in the trailer.  The lines are interesting too: the triangular shape formed by the outline of mother and son; the lines formed by the gaze of the mother to her sources of concern–the car on the other side of the street.  Another contrasting point is that of the bicycle and the car, reflecting old and new.  It is only in the past 5 to 10 years that the bicycle has relinquished dominance over the road to the automobile.  Ones such as this one are becoming rare and thus reflect a time that is gone with the wind.
