We visited the battle field on Saturday. Getting there early, we avoided the rush which made it a pleasant visit. Next to the memorial to the fallen US Cavalery Soldiers is one for the Native Americans who died defending their homes and families. While the Natives won the battle, they lost the war. After defeat, many of them moved to Canada. Apparently this action has a long history going back to revolutionary times and which may be repeated, depending on the outcome of the November Elections.
We strolled throught the museum and watched the introductory film in the Visitor Centre. Then we walked up to the site of Custer’s Last Stand. Stones commemorate the last position of each fallen soldier. Recently stones have been put in place to mark fallen Natives as well. There are stones all over the field. It must have been quite a mess.
Following that we took the driving tour that covers the wider area. There were several battles fought that day in different locations.
