2015 Virginia

On May 2nd we drove down to Massanutten Virginia for a week of golf followed by a few days in Georgia and then a trek through Knowlton Quebec via Cape Cod on our return home, on May 17th.

Among the plethora of reasons to go down to Virginie was to play golf.  Mid May, at least this year, was a good time to go down.  The leaves were just starting to unfold, and trees were in bloom.

    Dogwood

Among the flowers that bloomed in Virginia was the dogwood tree.  These were often found in the woods lining the golf course, roads and highways. Often in concert with a purple flowering tree (possibly a crab apple).

From our mountain resort in Massanutten we drove the one or so hours to visit Thomas Jefferson’s home in Charlottesville, named Monticello.  During our visit there we took an organized tour of the building.  The tour was quite extensive and included all 3 floors of the house.  Our guide offered insights into life in the house…

In front of the house is an open field framed by a walking path.  Here one can find recreations of some of the gardens.  Plants which would have been used in Jefferson’s time are noted.  From the pinnacle of the loop one is presented with the classical view of the House.

Inside the house we were allowed to photograph only the oval room on the top floor of the house.  The reason cited was for copyright reasons. Naturally I took several pictures of this room, as did everyone else on the tour.

I expect that having circular windows in a circular (oval) room was an effort to maintain architectural integrity.

Among our group was a Historian specializing in American History and more specifically the Civil War.  As a result we visited a number of historical sites and were informed of more details and context one might normally expect.  The Shenandoah Valley was the site of several battles during the American Civil War; the city of…

It was in the basement of the main house, on the right behind the log cabin, where the residents spent the battle.  The front line was just 100 meters or so past the house.

The log cabin (as seen in yesterday’s post) was used as a work shed where wagon wheels were made.  The tools of the trade are hung on the walls.

An awkward shot taken in the museum.  It may be Col. George Patton as he did died of wounds from battle, although not from this one.

    Cape Cod

Way stayed in South Yarmouth, on the south coast of the Cape.  It was just a two day stop over on our way to Knowlton Quebec. After arriving we walked along the shore until we reached a lane that took us to South Shore Drive and ultimately to Skipper Restaurant for an early dinner. The…

The following day brought with it brighter weather.  What was impressive was how calm the seas remained.

On our drive north to Provincetown we stopped off at Cape Cod National Seashore.

Before we reached Provincetown, we drove out along Race Point Road to the north coast, within the National Seashore.  From the Visitor Centre we were able to see a full panorama. The extent of the sand dunes was quite impressive.

After the Visitor Centre we drove further out to Race Point Beach, which we had seen from the observation deck of the Centre.

    Knowlton

Knowlton is a place I have visited since the early 1970’s.  Between 1974 and 1985 I owned a place just north in Racine Quebec.  So returning to Knowlton is both a walk down memory lane and a comparison of what has changed.  While many things are the same, there are of course some new buildings,…

With dinner one evening at the Auberge we enjoyed a local wine, from Domain Les Brome, the local wine district (another change). We were very impressed with the wine so the following day we visited the winery: Léon Courville, vigneron.
