May 19: Island of Rugen

in ,

On this day we continued our trip around the island, but certainly, the highlight of the day and in fact the whole trip was visting Hertha Lake, Hertha Bush and Hertha Mountain. I think the Bush had seen better days.

And yes, there’s even a map !

The island is replete with fields of yellow blooming flowers, which I think were canola. The usual house was covered with a thatched roof. I was told, that depending on weather conditions, these roofs could last for 40-50 years.

The last place we visited on the island was the little town of Vitt. The octagonal church that guards the entrance to the village is said to be the northern-most church in Germany. The church was built in 1806. The village itself is very small, but quaint, with most buildings covered with thatched roofs. Excellent smoked fish: herring, halibut, mackerel, salmon.
