News item: Arkansas Passes Privacy Bill That Could Kill Street Photography

Goodbye Henri Cartier-Bresson.  Goodbye Bruce Gilden, Vivian Maier, Jay Maisel, Elliott Erwitt. You’re criminals.

I was doing a project on vacant sports venues, such as football fields, baseball diamonds, etc. I was at a public park photographing vacant tennis courts when someone approached me and asked if was taking pictures of the children. A number of thoughts went through my mind. Immediately after an initial feeling of astonishment I thought how brave this individual is as I could be some wacco that would have a violent reaction. As the menu of alternative responses appeared on the inside of my eyeball I chose a straight answer I understand.  no I’m photographing empty courts (not the children). Indignant. He didn’t ask to see the images. I think he got my sense.

Constraints on taking pictures come up regular. Legislated constraints are frequently defeated, yet like this one from Arkansas, they keep popping up.

Why is this happening?
