Woody Point

We made our way up Highway 1, the TCH (Trans Canada Highway), from Port aux Basques through Stephanville and Corner Brook to Woody Point.

In Stephanville we stopped at the New Chateau Restaurant for a mid-morning breakfast: two eggs over well; bacon; toast; beans;  potatoes and coffee for $7.95. In Corner Brook we stopped for gas, $1.36/liter (premium 91 octane).

Woody Point is within the boundaries of Gros Morne National Park. We checked into the Bonne Bay Inn.  From there we proceeded to the Gros Morne Interpretive Centre and then to a guided hike in the Table Lands that, among other things, provided the geological explanation as to why Gros Morne is a World Heritage Site. The hike was just over 4km return and took us across the barren rubble of rusted ochre-coloured rock. Among the rocks that are toxified with nickel, cadmium and other heavy metals, were plants, many coming into bloom. Few plants grow here because of the nature of the rock but those that do are able to extract and use the native toxins to their benefit.

Following a short trip to the little fishing village of Trout River we returned to the Inn for dinner: Cod.

The Inn is located on a hill above Woody Point facing Gros Morne Mountain itself. Our rooms faced onto the Bay with Gros Morne on one end and the Table Lands at the other.
