On the North-west point of Fogo Island, Newfoundland, is Brimstone Head Park. It has been referred to as one of the four corners of the earth, or sometimes the World’s End. But, regardless of the term used, they suggest an edge. We came across another edge just outside Riyadh, Jebel Fihrayn, part of the Tuwaiq Escarpment.
It wasn’t just the escarpment itself that defined this place as an edge, but it was also the journey there. The track that leads from the highway to the site can only be travelled by a four-wheel drive vehicle with sufficient ground clearance. It is slow-going along this part of the route, and that is what contributes to the sense of remoteness of the place; that is what makes it feel like an edge rather than simply an escarpment.
